A community refrigerator to reduce food waste

Each year, about 1.3 billion tons of food end up in the trash, which would be enough to feed two billion people, according to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

It is one of the serious problems that societies face and initiatives arise daily to try to stop this problem, many times from the citizens themselves.

During these days, the first community refrigerator in the city was inaugurated in London, which aims to reduce food waste and raise awareness among people about this phenomenon.

The idea is that all Londoners can deposit food there that they will no longer use but that could be used by other people. It will also be open so that restaurants, shops and supermarkets can carry their products.

The refrigerator was named "Freddie", opened this week and is located in the Brixton neighborhood. The initiative was promoted by the group The People’s Fridge and was carried out thanks to a fundraising campaign through an internet platform.

This group also intends to install more of these coolers at other points.
