Why is environmental policy not interesting?

Why is environmental policy not interesting?

By Cristián Frers

In Argentina there are deterioration processes where resources are wasted, for example energy, as well as critical conditions in the quality of life of the population.

Much of this deterioration problem in our country is due to the conviction that they are unlimited and invulnerable; also the lack of properly applied norms, the lack of coordination and insufficient information, and the public awareness of the scope of the protection systems. Because the environmental law is unknown, the country lacks clearly defined resources and their enforcement.

Many times, the municipalities, directorates or environmental secretariats do not believe that it is an issue of interest to society: "the environment is not an important issue like the issue of public works", it is stated.

It must satisfy important needs for all sectors of local life. Each particular community must take stock of the development process of each region. It also requires an updated diagnosis, defining how that reality is affected by its economic, social and cultural environment.

The management problem depends above all on the behavior of society. How many of us wear seat belts in cars, out of fear of fines and not as an accident prevention measure?

Steps can be taken to avoid many of these problems. However, on many occasions decisions are made that go even against common sense. Rigorous evidence on the state of the environment is required to guide decision-making, both in the public and private sectors. It must be based on true information to ensure that the investments and actions of public institutions are oriented towards results that achieve impact.

There is no ecological autonomy in the world: pollution does not recognize borders. Precaution is one of the principles accepted by governments and international entities, as the guiding principle of environmental policy; It provides guidance on how to intervene, when necessary, in a less damaging way and is also a tool for defining political decisions that affect the environment. Likewise, it acts on a line that crosses different disciplines and focuses on the quality of life of present and future citizens.
