5G networks: Scientists and doctors from 36 countries warn of serious health effects

We, the undersigned, more than 180 scientists and doctors from 36 countries, recommend a moratorium on the deployment of the fifth generation of telecommunications, 5G, until the potential dangers to human health and the environment have been investigated by independent scientists. of the industry. 5G will significantly increase exposure to radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) compared to 2G, 3G, 4G, WIFI, etc. already existing. RF EMFs have been shown to be harmful to humans and the environment.

5G leads to massive increase in mandatory wireless radiation exposure

5G technology is effective only at a short distance. It is poorly transmitted through solid material. Many new antennas will be required and large-scale deployment will result in antennas every 10 to 12 houses in urban areas, thus massively increasing the mandatory exposure.

With "the ever-increasing use of wireless technologies," no one can avoid exposure. Because it adds an increasing number of 5G transmitters (including within homes, businesses and hospitals) with an estimated "10 to 20 billion connections" (refrigerators, washing machines, surveillance cameras, cars and buses, etc.) that will be part of the Internet of Things. All of these factors can lead to a substantial increase in total long-term exposure to EU citizens.

The harmful effects of exposure to RF EMFs are already proven

More than 230 scientists from more than 40 countries have expressed their "serious concerns" regarding the ubiquitous and growing exposure to EMFs generated by electrical and wireless devices already before the additional launch of 5G. They refer to the fact that "numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels far below international and national guidelines." Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increased harmful free radicals, genetic damage, structural and functional changes in the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on the general well-being of humans. The damages go far beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harmful effects to both animals and plants.

After the scientists' appeal was written in 2015, additional research has convincingly confirmed serious health risks from wireless RF EMFs. The largest study in the world, conducted by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) (25 million US dollars), shows a statistically significant increase in the incidence of brain and cardiac cancer in animals exposed to EMF below the criteria of ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) followed by most countries. These results support the results in human epidemiological studies on RF radiation and brain tumor risk. A large number of peer-reviewed scientific reports demonstrate harm to human health from EMF.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), concluded that EMF frequencies from 30 KHz to 300 GHz are possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B ). However, new studies such as the aforementioned NTP study and various epidemiological investigations, including the latest studies on cell phone use and brain cancer risks, confirm that RF EMF radiation is carcinogenic to humans.

The 2016 EUROPAEM Guide on EMF states that “there is strong evidence that long-term exposure to certain EMF is a risk factor for diseases such as certain types of cancer, Alzheimer's disease and male infertility… Common symptoms of EHS ( electromagnetic hypersensitivity) include headaches, concentration difficulties, sleep problems, depression, lack of energy, fatigue and flu-like symptoms ”.

A growing part of the European population is affected by health symptoms that for many years have been linked to exposure to electromagnetic fields and wireless radiation in the scientific literature. The International Scientific Declaration on EHS and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), Brussels 2015, declares that: “In keeping with our current scientific knowledge, in this way, we insist on all national and international organizations and institutions, in particular the World Organization for Health (WHO), to recognize EHS and MCS as true medical conditions, which, acting as sentinel diseases, may create a major public health problem in the coming years throughout the world, that is, in all countries that apply the unlimited use of technologies based on wireless electromagnetic fields and commercialized chemical substances ... Inaction is a cost to society and cannot continue to be an option ... we unanimously recognize this serious danger to public health that urgently requires the recognition of this condition at all international levels,… and, above all, that they be adopted and prioritized in the important measures of primary prevention, to face this global pan-epidemic in perspective ”.


The Precautionary Principle (UNESCO) was adopted by the EU in 2005: “When human activities can lead to a morally unacceptable danger, scientifically possible but uncertain, measures must be taken to avoid or reduce this danger”.

Resolution 1815 (Council of Europe, 2011): “Take all reasonable measures to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields, especially radio frequencies emitted by mobile phones, and in particular exposure to children and young people, for whom the risk of head tumors seems higher ... the Assembly recommended the application of the ALARA principle (as low as reasonably achievable), that is, the level as low as reasonably possible, taking into account not only the so-called thermal effects, but also the effects athermic [non-thermal] or biological emission or radiation of electromagnetic fields ”and“ improve the risk assessment criteria and the quality of the assessment by creating a standard scale of risks ”.

The Nuremberg Code of Medical Ethics (1949) applies to all experiments on humans, thus it includes the deployment of 5G with the new exposure to RF EMFs. All these experiments must be designed and based “on the results obtained through previous experimentation with animals and the full knowledge of the natural history of the disease or the problem under study, so that the anticipated results justify carrying out the experiment (….) No experiment should be performed when there is a priori reason to suppose that death or irreparable injury may occur; except, perhaps, in experiments in which medical researchers are also experimental subjects. " (Nuremberg Code points 3 and 5). Published scientific studies show that there is "a priori reason to assume" real health risks.

The European Environment Agency (EEA) is warning about "The risk of radiation from everyday devices", even though the radiation is below the WHO / ICNIRP standards. The EEA also concludes: “There are numerous examples in the past that failure to use the precautionary principle led to serious, and often irreversible, damage to health and the environment… harmful exposures could spread before there is evidence” categorical "by long-term exposures, as well as a biological understanding [mechanism] of the damage they may cause."

"Safety Guidelines" protect industry, not health

The current ICNIRP “safety guidelines” are outdated. All the evidence of damage mentioned above arises even if the radiation falls below these ICNIRP “safety guidelines”. Therefore, new safety regulations are necessary. The reason for the misleading guidelines is that “the conflict of interest of ICNIRP members, due to their relationships with the telecommunications or electricity industries, undermine the impartiality that should govern the regulation of the Public Exposure Standards for non-ionizing radiation… To assess cancer risks it is necessary to include scientists with competence in medicine, especially in oncology ”.

The current ICNIRP / WHO guidelines for EMF are based on the outdated assumption that "the fundamental effect of exposure to RF EMFs of relevance to human health and safety is the heating of exposed tissue." However, scientists have shown that many different types of illnesses and harmful effects occur without heating (“non-thermal effect”) at radiation levels well below ICNIRP guidelines.
