The McDonald’s food chain has been in the news recently after revealing 17 changes to its menu in response to customer complaints and falling sales. At first glance, these changes seem to improve the quality of your menu items, but is it too little or too late?
McDonald’s best-selling hamburger, Big Mac, plus fries and a side Coke give you 940 calories along with 123 grams of carbs. Unfortunately, the problem does not end with McDonald’s food.
Getting more than a day's worth of carbohydrates in a meal could trigger a drop in blood sugar levels over the next two to four hours, increasing hunger and the possibility of overeating.
The high carbohydrate content may increase your insulin resistance which in turn causes metabolic syndrome and could lead to weight gain.
The development of this fast food chain began decades ago in response to the possibility of integrating mass production and food supply to a large geographic area.
The first fast food restaurants opened in the early 1920s (A&W, 1919 and White Castle, 1921), but the industry did not prosper until McDonald's revolutionized food preparation and opened chains across the United States. United.
From the first restaurant in 1940 to their first franchise in 1954, the McDonald brothers worked to optimize their service, lower their overhead, and increase their profits. Today, the chain is struggling to change perceptions and adapt more to health-conscious consumers.
How many calories does a Big Mac have
Wondering how many calories a Big Mac has is often common among people who eat at fast food stores. In fact, just check out MacDonalds' own page and MacDonalds admits that their product boasts a total of 490 calories.
In this way, when a person eats the complete combo they taste: some french fries, a 16-ounce glass of Coca Cola and a hamburger.
The caloric sum of these three meals is: 288 calories (potatoes) + 208 calories (drink) + 490 calories (hamburger) = 986 calories. If you add to this that you eat a dessert, then in a single sitting you eat more than 1000 calories. A large amount and not healthy!
Changes in Response to Sales
The decline in sales over the past two years prompted many of the McDonald’s menu changes that were announced recently, and they have paid off. Sales increased 5.4% in the first quarter of this year and had a 35% quarterly gain compared to the same quarter last year.
However, the health of the organization does not equate to healthier menu options. On August 1, 2016, McDonald’s announced several changes that affect nearly half of its menu. These include:
- Eliminate artificial preservatives from menu items, including Chicken McNuggets, omelets, and scrambled eggs
- Remove high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) from breads.
- Serving chicken that has not been treated with antibiotics important to human medicine
Mike Andres, president of McDonald’s in the United States, said that the company has been carefully analyzing the preparation and foods that are served in the fast food chain. McDonald’s had reasons to use ingredients like HFCS and artificial preservatives, but their customers disagreed.
As quoted in The New York Times, Andres said, "Why take a stand to defend them if consumers say they don't want them?" And Marion Gross, McDonald’s Senior Vice President of Supply Chain North America, was quoted in Reuters as saying:
"We know they are not comfortable with high fructose corn syrup, so we are giving them what they are looking for in return."
His effort to improve the image of the food chain led the company to introduce a brand for the slogan, "the simpler the better."
McDonald’s is emphasizing crisp, fresh eggs from Egg McMuffins, 100% “real” beef from its burgers, and chicken now made with “simple ingredients from the pantry”.
Although McDonald’s tries to change its perception by making small improvements in the food supply and remodeling its restaurants, it has not changed the amount of carbohydrates, calories or the lack of nutritional value in the foods they offer. Your best option is still eating whole foods.

Planning your meals at the beginning of the week and spending a little time preparing your meals will help you maintain a healthy diet.
I also recommend that you keep a selection of your favorite raw and fresh vegetables in the refrigerator, as well as raw nuts, since the more raw foods you can add to your diet, the higher your nutrient intake. My personal goal is that approximately 80% of my food is raw.
