And this emergency sound only a few years ago (the World Water Forum held its third version in March, in Kyoto, Japan) began to be considered internationally as a terrifying observation of the no longer gradual, but dizzying scarcity of water in all the planet, arising not only from population growth, but from shocking human negligence with all its related consequences. The problem has gone from a rumble of a stream to an avalanche roar. Although the following figures have been massively disseminated by social organizations and NGOs dedicated to the protection of natural resources and the environment, it would be foolish to refrain from quoting them once again: 1.1 billion people today lack water and 2.4 billion sanitary facilities. 31 countries completely lack access to clean water sources. One out of four people does not reach pure water. Every eight seconds a child dies from drinking contaminated water. More than five million people die each year from polluted water.

The first World Water Forum held in 2000 in The Hague, set the goal for 2015 to halve the number of people without access to drinking water. But it did not include plans to avoid its monopoly. The conflict over the privatization of water sources was hardly mentioned, destined to be one of the most serious of the century that is beginning. Despite the fact that only 5% of the drinking water in the world is in private hands, the annual profits obtained by these companies are more than double what the oil industry earns today. But predicted as is the population growth of the planet of nine billion inhabitants by the year 2025, it is no job to imagine the monstrous mechanism that is in place for the water market. As natural rights, the most elementary common heritage tends to be lost, the right to breathe and the right to water, a symbol of the elementary right to life. Symbolism or evidence that the planet is nearing its end? How is the face of dying humanity reflected in the concave mirror of the drops of water?

Based on the fact that without water there is no future, the requirement of the Assembly of the Water Wise Men in Kyoto, is a combined universal individual and group, social, institutional action of all orders in concert for the protection and strengthening of sources, basins. , springs, ditches. Neither more nor less the same that the aboriginal peoples of the world have done since ancient times. Exercise the right to water, with the zealous participation of everyone - children, youth, adults - in caring for water.
